What is the nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) upgrade?
nbn® is rolling out a major fibre upgrade initiative, sometimes referred to as Fibre Connect or Fast Fibre. It is designed to replace older copper-based technology with full fibre, giving eligible customers the opportunity to upgrade from Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). This allows for faster, more reliable internet to meet the growing demands of modern homes and businesses.
Who qualifies for the $0 FTTP upgrade?
nbn® is progressively upgrading parts of its network across Australia, with approximately two million premises expected to become eligible for FTTP by 2027. If your current service is delivered via FTTN or FTTC and your location is in an upgrade-ready area, you may be able to access the upgrade at no cost when switching to an eligible high-speed plan.
What is the difference between FTTP and my current connection?
Here is a quick breakdown:
-
FTTP (Fibre to the Premises): Fibre runs directly to your premises, removing all copper from the last part of the connection.
-
FTTN (Fibre to the Node): Fibre runs to a nearby node, and copper cabling completes the connection to your premises.
-
FTTC (Fibre to the Curb): Fibre runs to the kerb near your premises, with copper wiring covering the final distance.
FTTP is the most reliable and highest performing of these technologies.
What are the benefits of upgrading to FTTP?
Upgrading to FTTP provides:
-
Access to higher speed tiers, including plans up to 1000/400 Mbps
-
More stable performance, even during peak usage times
-
Lower latency and fewer disruptions
-
A future-ready connection that can scale with your needs
FTTP is ideal for businesses relying on cloud applications, large data transfers, video conferencing, and hybrid working environments.
Will my current modem or router still work?
Most nbn®-compatible routers will work with an FTTP connection. Some equipment may require configuration changes. While we cannot guarantee all bring-your-own (BYO) hardware will be compatible, our support team is available to assist where possible.
Do I need to change plans to receive FTTP?
Yes. To access the free upgrade, you must sign up for an eligible high-speed nbn® plan. The plan change will only take effect once your FTTP service is fully installed and active.
What if I am renting the property?
Renters can still access the FTTP upgrade. You will need to obtain permission from your landlord or property manager, as the installation involves some minor construction work both inside and outside the building. The process is typically non-invasive and designed to minimise disruption.
